Thag 5.8 Vakkali – Suffusing Joy

“Afflicted by a wind disease,
You dwell in the great forest,
This place is rough for one living on alms,
what will you do, monk?”

“With all-encompassing bliss and joy,
I will pervade this body,
bearing up with the roughness; [1]

This is how I shall live in this great forest.

Developing the four resting places of awareness,
along with the governing faculties and mental strengths,
and also, the seven support of awakening; [2]

This is how I shall live in this great forest.

Remembering those who live
With unremitting dedication and resolution,
Persistent and steady in their practice,
living in harmony and abounding in happiness; [3]

This is how I shall live in this great forest.

Calling to mind the All Awake Buddha,
The Foremost, the Mastered, the Stilled,
Never lazy, by day and night; [4]

This is how I shall live in this great forest.
