Purisa Sutta
At Sāvatthi.
At that time,
The king Pasenadi of Kosala went to the Awakened One,
Paid loving respects,
Sat down to the side and asked:
“Bhante, how many things can arise within someone
which create their own trouble,
displeasure
and makes their lives difficult? [1]
Three things can arise within someone your majesty,
which create their own trouble,
displeasure
and makes their lives difficult.
What three?
(1) Greed…
(2) Anger…
(3) Delusion…[2]
These are the things that can arise within someone
which create their own trouble,
displeasure
and makes their lives difficult?
By greed, hate and delusion,
people are corrupted in mind,
And they hurt themselves like a reed
Would produce a fruit that breaks its stalk. [3]
[1] “kati nu kho, bhante, purisassa dhammā ajjhattaṃ uppajjamānā uppajjanti ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāyā”ti?
[2] Lobho … Doso … Moho …
[3] “Lobho doso ca moho ca, purisaṃ pāpacetasaṃ; Hiṃsanti attasambhūtā, tacasāraṃva samphalan”ti.
