Khp 9 Discourse on Boundless Love

Metta Sutta

 

This should be displayed by one skilled in goodness,

One who walks at peace and is accomplished;[1]

That person is able, straight and composed,

Well spoken, kind and free from conceit.[2]

 

Content and easy to support,

With few duties, living lightly;[3]

Their faculties at peace, clever,

Unobtrusive and not greedy with family folk.[4]

 

Not performing anything

That the sage would later reprove,[5]

Wishing:

 

’May all beings be happy and secure,’

‘May all beings be happy at heart.’[6]

 

‘May whichever beings there are,

Whether frail or strong without exception;[7]

Whether they are great, tall

Medium or short, rough or delicate,[8]

Visible or invisible,

Those who live near or far away ;[9]

Those who are alive and those about to be,[10]

May all beings be happy at heart.’[11]

 

Not deceiving others

Nor despising anyone anywhere;[12]

Doing away with bitterness and retaliation,

Not wishing harm for others.[13]

 

Just as a mother would for her child,

Protecting her only child with her own life,[14]

In the same way, towards all beings,

One develops a boundless heart.[15]

 

With Boundless Love for this entire universe,

One develops a boundless heart.[16]

Above, below and all around,

Unrestricted, rid of anger and resentment.[17]

[While] standing, walking or sitting,

 

[Even] laying down, for as long as one is awake;[18]

This awareness should be established,

This is said to be Brahma’s mode of being.[19]

 

Not grasping to any opinions and judgements,

Good in nature and discerning,[20]

Giving up the sensory gratification,

One [is headed for the realms of bliss].[21]

 

 

[1] Karaṇīyamatthakusalena, Yanta santaṃ padaṃ abhisamecca;

[2] Sakko ujū ca suhujū ca, Sūvaco cassa mudu anatimānī.

[3] Santussako ca subharo ca, Appakicco ca sallahukavutti;

[4] Santindriyo ca nipako ca, Appagabbho kulesvananugiddho.

[5] Na ca khuddamācare kiñci, Yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṃ;

[6] Sukhino va khemino hontu, Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā.

[7] Ye keci pāṇabhūtatthi, Tasā vā thāvarā vanavasesā;

[8] Dīghā vā ye va mahantā, Majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā.

[9] Diṭṭhā vā ye va adiṭṭhā, Ye va dūre vasanti avidūre;

[10] Sambhavesī: Seeking birth

[11] Bhūtā va sambhavesī va, Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā.

[12] Na paro paraṃ nikubbetha, Nātimaññetha  katthaci na kañci;

[13] Byārosanā  paṭighasañña, Nāññamaññassa dukkhamiccheyya.

[14] Mātā yathā niyaṃputta, Māyusā ekaputtamanurakkhe;

[15] Evampi sabbabhūtesu, Mānasaṃ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ.

[16] Mettañca sabbalokasmi, Mānasaṃ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṃ;

[17] Uddhaṃ adho ca tiriyañca, Asambādhaṃ averamasapattaṃ.

[18] Tiṭṭhaṃ caraṃ nisinno va, Sayāno yāvatāssa vitamiddho;

[19] Etaṃ satiṃ adhiṭṭheyya, Brahmametaṃ vihāramidhamāhu.

[20] Diṭṭhiñca anupaggamma,  Sīlavā dassanena sampanno;

[21] Kāmesu vinaya gedhaṃ, Na hi jātuggabbhaseyya punaretīti.
