AN 5.161 Allaying Resentment

Paṭhamaāghātapaṭivinaya sutta

There are five ways of allaying resentment, monks,

by which one can completely subdue any resentment that arises.

 What five?

(1) Whenever resentment arises because of someone,

Love should be cultivated towards them,

by doing so, resentment is allayed.

(2) Whenever resentment arises because of someone,

Compassion should be cultivated towards them,

by doing so, resentment is allayed.

(3) Whenever resentment arises for someone,

Calm should be cultivated towards them,

By doing so, resentment is allayed.

(4) Whenever resentment arises because of someone,

One should resort to not paying attention to them

nor minding their presence,

By doing so, resentment is allayed.

(5) Whenever resentment arises because of someone,

whatever action that person has performed, one should remember:

“They are responsible for their own actions,

A successor to their actions,

They originate from their actions,

Their actions are their true kin,

Their actions are their refuge,

And whether their actions are skillful or neglectful,

They will inherit [their fruits].”

By doing so, resentment is allayed.

These are the five ways of allaying resentment, monks,

By which one can subdue completely any resentment that arises
