Dutiyasāriputta Sutta
At that time, the venerable Sāriputta went to the Awakened One,
Paid loving respects, sat down next to him.
The Awakened One asked this:
1. Aids for Stream Entry
I hear some say:
“Aids for stream entry, aids for stream entry”[i]
What are these aids for stream entry?
“Bhante,
(1) Association with truly realized people is an aid for stream entry;
(2) Hearing the true Dhamma is an aid for stream entry;
(3) Wise reflection is an aid for stream entry;
(4) Practice in accordance with the Dhamma is an aid for stream entry.[ii]
“Well said, Sāriputta, well said”
Those surely are aids to entering the stream.
2. The Stream
I hear some say:
“The stream, the stream”[iii]
What is this stream, Sāriputta?
Bhante, the stream is the eight-spoked path of the awakened ones, that means:
Wise understanding, wise intention, wise speech, wise action, wise livelihood, wise practice, wise presence of mind and wise meditation.
“Well said, Sāriputta, well said”
That surely is the stream.
3. A Stream-Enterer
I hear some say:
“A stream-enterer, a stream-enterer.”[iv]
What is a stream-enterer?
Bhante, a stream-enterer is one who walks along the eightfold path,[v]
whichever venerable one of such a name, from such a family.
“Well said, Sāriputta, well said”
That surely is a stream-enterer.
