Oghapañhā Sutta
Jambhukhādaka:
“Friend Sāriputta, I hear people say:
‘The floods, the floods.’ [1]
What are these floods?”
Ven. Sāriputta:
There are these four floods, friend:
The flood of the senses;
The flood of identity;
The flood of views;
The flood of lacking discernment.[2]
Jambhukhādaka:
“But is there a path, a practice to let go of these floods?”[3]
Ven. Sāriputta: “There is, friend.”
Jambhukhādaka: “What is it?”
Ven. Sāriputta:
“The eight-spoked path of the awakened ones is
for letting go of these floods, that is:
Wise perspective,
wise intention,
wise speech,
wise action,
wise livelihood,
wise practice,
wise awareness,
wise meditation.”
Jambhukhādaka:
“It is an auspicious path,
an auspicious practice for the letting go of the floods.
And it is suitable for living mindfully.”
