Dutiyabhavasutta
At that time, the Venerable Ānanda went to the Awakened One, paid loving respects, sat down beside him and asked:
“Bhante, I hear it said: ‘Beingness. Beingness.’[i]
What is this beingness?”
[Plane of the Senses]
“When there are no actions
and no result of action
done in the world of the senses,
could sensory beingness be experienced?[ii]
“No, Bhante”
“Exactly, Ānanda.”
Actions are the field,
Consciousness is the seed,
And discontentment is the water.”[iii]
“Beings are bound by lack of discernment and fettered by discontent.[iv]
When their intentions and ambitions are rooted
in this gross plane of existence,[v]
they take renewed birth there, repeatedly.”[vi]
[Plane of Celestial Form]
“When there are no actions
and no result of action
done in the world of celestial form,
could celestial form beingness be experienced?[vii]
“No, Bhante”
“Exactly, Ānanda!
Actions are the field,
Consciousness is the seed,
And discontentment is the water.”
“Beings are bound by lack of discernment
and fettered by discontent.
When their intentions and ambitions
are rooted in this middle plane of existence,
they take renewed birth there, repeatedly.”
[Formless Plane]
“When there are no actions
and no result of actions
done in the world of the formless,
could formless beingness be experienced.”[viii]
“No, Bhante”
“Exactly, Ānanda.
Actions are the field,
Consciousness is the seed,
And discontentment is the water.”
“Beings are bound by lack of discernment
and fettered by discontent.
When, their intentions and ambitions
are rooted in this fine plane of existence,
they take renewed birth there, repeatedly.”
