AN 10.31 Ten Reasons for the Vinaya

AN 10.31 Upālisutta

Then, the venerable Upāli went to the Awakened One,

paid loving respects and sat down beside him.

He asked:

“Bhante, based on how many reasons did the Realized One encourage training rules among his students and the recitation of the Monastic Code (Pāṭimokkha)?

“Upāli, it is based on ten reasons:

(1) For the goodness of the saṅgha,

(2) For comfort of the saṅgha,

(3) For holding back shameless people,

(4) For the comfort of good and honest monks,

(5) For minimizing present unwholesome states,

(6) For protecting against future unwholesome states,

(7) For inspiring faith in those who are not yet inspired,

(8) For inspiring even more faith to those who are inspired,

(9) For the long lasting of the true Dhamma,

(10) For assistance in the training. [1]

“Upāli, it is based on these ten reasons that the Realized One encouraged training rules among his students and the recitation of the Monastic Code (Pāṭimokkha).
