28. Attachments: It’s all in the mind

This short teaching helps set the mind straight regarding attachments. Oftentimes, the simplest explanations are the easiest to digest…

‘The Smooth & Creamy Discourse on Unshakable Happiness’

😊

“What is unwholesome about attachments is that,

when the things we are attached to stop,

we become distressed, and lose our minds.

If something brings a happy feeling inside, wonderful.

But can you just experience happiness anyways,

not necessarily because of the action or thing itself?

Remember, the unwholesome is not the object,

it is your state of mind.

Mainly likes and dislikes.

Craving and aversion.

Greed and hatred.

Those are simply tearing you apart

slowly, more and more.

If something brings love in your heart, great.

Then investigate:

when that thing is taken away from you,

how do you react?

Remember though, it is not the “things”

which are responsible

for the wholesome or unwholesome states,

it is your mind.

Some people like peanut butter,

some people hate it.

What’s the difference?

The mind.

Peanut butter is peanut butter.”  😊

Student:      “Bhante, what is the name for this discourse?

How should it be remembered?”

Teacher:      “You can remember this as:

‘The Peanut Butter Discourse’,

or

‘Seeing Peanut Butter as Peanut Butter’,

or

‘The Smooth & Creamy Discourse on Unshakeable Happiness’.

This is how it should be remembered.”  😊
