An Introduction to the Buddha’s Teaching and his Original Discourses
Bhāvanā is a simple guide for seekers based on the original discourses of the Buddha himself, which goes to the heart. The word Bhāvanā is often translated as ‘Meditation’ but its meaning is far more vast in implications and could be best translated as ‘wholesome mental development’.
In this book, practitioners will find the sequence which the Buddha most often used to give an overview of his whole teaching, in an accessible format and modern language, as it is found in the DN 2 Discourse on the Meditative Life.
This is perhaps the Buddha’s most essential exposition of the Gradual Training that he taught. Along with his original meditation instructions on Boundless Love as found throughout his discourses but conveyed with special eloquence in the SN 42.8 Discourse on Sounding the Conch of Dhamma.
Lastly, the second section of this book sheds light on various essential aspects of this training in skillfulness that will help meditators ‘Open the Gates to Awakening’. Using a wide array of discourses to support aspirants on the path to happiness and freedom.
