Saṃyojana Sutta
“Wanderers, there are ten fetters.
What ten?
There are the five lower fetters,
And the five higher fetters. [1]
What are the five lower fetters?
(1) The belief in a personal identity,
(2) Doubt (in the Dhamma)
(3) Blind observance of rites and rituals,
(4) Sensory desire,
(5) and hate.[2]
What are the five higher fetters?
(6) Desire for the finer form states,
(7) Desire for the formless states,
(8) Pride,
(9) Restlessness,
(10) Lack of discernment. [3]
These are all ten fetters.”
