Iti 23 Dedication in Wholesome States

Ubhayattha Sutta

This was spoken by the Awakened One,

Spoken by the Worthy One as I have heard:

“There is one thing monks, by which,

when it is cultivated

and practiced constantly,

one is assured of both kinds of happiness:

Happiness here and now,

And in the coming future. [1]

What is this one thing?

Dedication to wholesome states. [2]

This is the one thing monks, by which,

when it is cultivated

and practiced constantly,

one is assured of both kinds of happiness:

Happiness here and now,

And in the coming future.”

This is what the Awakened One said.

Further he explained:

“The wise praises careful dedication

in performing actions yielding goodness, [3]

The thoughtful wise obtains

Happiness then, in both ways. [4]

Well-being here and now,

And welfare in the coming future; [5]

A seer’s clear understanding of happiness,

Is the reason one is called a sage.” [6]

This is what the Buddha said,

As I have heard it.

[1] “Ekadhammo, bhikkhave, bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhigayha tiṭṭhati— diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṃ samparāyikañca.

[2] Appamādo  kusalesu dhammesu.

[3] “Appamādaṃ pasaṃsanti, puññakiriyāsu paṇḍitā;

[4] Appamatto ubho atthe, adhigaṇhāti paṇḍito.

[5] Diṭṭhe dhamme ca yo attho, yo cattho samparāyiko;

[6] Atthābhisamayā  dhīro, paṇḍitoti pavuccatī”ti.
