AN VI 92 Impossible for One Who Sees (1)

Paṭhamaabhabbaṭṭhāna Sutta

“Monks, six things are impossible.

What are they?

It is impossible for one who sees [the Dhamma]:

(1) To live without reverence and respect towards the Teacher,

(2) To live without reverence and respect towards the Teaching,

(3) To live without reverence and respect towards the community,

(4) To live without reverence and respect towards the practice,

(5) To revert back to unbecoming ways, [1]

(6) To be reborn for an eighth time. [2]

Monks, six things are impossible.

[1] anāgamanīyaṁ vatthuṁ paccāgantuṁ // I take this as being the five elementary virtues. BS: “They can’t establish their belief on unreliable grounds.”

[2] aṭṭhamaṁ bhavaṁ nibbattetuṁ. nis + vatteti, Caus. of nibbattati
